CASE OF THE DAY

A 59-year-old woman with a 1-month history of right-ankle pain and a 1-week history of right-ankle swelling presents for evaluation. She reports her pain is 8 out of 10, has been limping, and is an avid hiker but denies any recent injury or trauma. She has been icing as well as applying some compression for treatment. She was recently diagnosed with osteoporosis and has a history of right-ankle sprains and reports regular popping and cracking from her right ankle. She has no history of gout (her half brother has it), radiographs are noncontributory, and magnetic resonance imaging is ordered to evaluate the source of pain.
